Katrin Klingenberg, Founder and Executive Director, Lead Designer

As Executive Director and Lead Designer, Katrin develops business opportunities for the implementation of the passive house standard for various climate zones in North America. She manages locally the affordable homebuyer’s program and community development activities for Urbana. Her duties include the planning, design and management of projects, managing the e-co lab team, and maintaining client relationships.

Before specializing in passive house construction Katrin worked for the architecture firms Murphy/Jahn, Inc. and Solomon Cordwell Buenz & Assoc. in Chicago on large-scale commercial buildings, specializing in double wall façade systems. 

Recently Katrin has worked with Dr. Feist at the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt, Germany, on the translation of the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) into the English language. She has designed and built two passive houses in the U.S. and consulted on numerous projects throughout the U.S. and Canada. e-co lab’s third passive house project is scheduled to break ground in Spring of 2007.

She has taught Building Science and Design Studios at the University of Illinois in Chicago and at Urbana-Champaign.

She has presented on the passive house topic at national conferences as well as abroad. She is a licensed architect in Germany, and received a master’s degree in Architecture from Ball State University in Indiana.


Mike Kernagis, Construction Manager and Builder

As Construction Manager and Builder, Mike oversees the construction process on e-co lab’s passive house sites. As the builder he puts passive house theory into practice and ensures the correct implementation of passive house detailing. He is instrumental in the design process providing the feedback loop from the site to the drawing board. He is involved in developing details and construction methods to verify the economic feasibility of passive house construction.

Additionally, he provides best passive house practice training to homebuilders on the job site and supports educational initiatives through the development of seminars in conjunction with the local community college.

Mike has been in construction since 1990. He received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
